Trey McBride Set to Become First NFL Player With Same-Sex Parents

A pair of LGBTQ+ parents have raised a soon-to-be NFL star.

Following Trey McBride’s fantastic track record as a tight end at the Colorado State University, he is poised to get drafted by a team in the National Football League. During an interview with NBC News, McBride credited his two moms – Kate McBride and her partner Jen – for getting to where he is now. If McBride is selected in the NFL draft, he’ll become the first athlete in the league to openly discuss his same-sex parents. He explained:
“Really, it’s just normal to me. It’s something that I’ve been with my whole life. It’s not anything that I know differently.”

As expected, McBride’s two mothers are extremely proud of and happy for their child.
“I’m excited to see him just live his dream,” Kate said. “When your kid comes to you when they’re little and they say they want to be president, you’re like, ‘OK, honey, that’s great.’ He wanted to play in the NFL, and he’s going to do it.”
Jen also noted how they dealt with the possibility of McBride being bullied for having two moms as his parents. She recalled what she always told McBride growing up:
“You come from a family that every single one of us are in your corner, no matter what, anytime in the day. So, nobody really talked about bullying.”

Meanwhile, McBride credits his parents for being successful in football and serving as role models for him as an individual.
“It’s pretty special,” the football player remarked. “It’s heartwarming and they’ve been great role models for me and my brothers, so it’s cool to see how they raised us and it’s just very special for us.”
